SEAMAN FOOD SERVICE

The Seaman USD 345 School Food Service Program provides nutritious, low cost and appealing meals to six elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school.  Approximately 2,800 meals are carefully prepared and served daily by the forty child nutrition professionals on our staff.  There are three kitchen schools:  Logan Elementary School, Seaman Middle School, and Seaman High School.  Seaman High School is the main production unit for the high school and satellites food in hot and cold carts to four elementary schools.  Logan Elementary School is the main production kitchen for Logan and two other elementary schools.

A Self-Serve line is available to all students at the elementary and secondary levels.  Students select from a variety of nutrient dense foods.  This system enables children to develop eating habits for a healthier life style, provides an opportunity to introduce "new" nutritious foods for students to try, and decreases plate waste.

Parents are both encouraged and welcomed to eat lunch with their child on regular school days.  It is best to make arrangements with the school secretary at least two days prior to visiting.

Seaman Food Service is actively involved with the District Health Council.  The department provides nutrition education exhibits at community health nights.  Nutrition Curriculum food and support materials are provided to the classroom for nutrition activities.

SPECIAL DIETS

Substitutions  may be made on a case-by-case basis only when supported by the correct documentation.  Special Diet forms must be completely filled out and signed by a recognized medical authority and the parent.  Forms are available from the food service office or any school nurse.

CHILD NUTRITION BENEFIT INFORMATION

A NEW MEAL APPLICATION MUST BE COMPLETED EACH YEAR to be considered for Free and Reduced Meals.  Applicants will be approved through Seaman Food and Nutrition Services.  All patrons applying for free or reduced price meals for their children may complete the application form available at www.usd345.com, pick up an application from the food service office or at any school during enrollment.  Instructions for completing the application are on the reverse side of the application.  Applications will be accepted before enrollment if you choose to drop it off between 7AM and 3PM, Monday through Friday.  Attempts will be made, at that time, to approve or deny all applications brought directly to the food service office.

MENUS

Menus are available at www.usd345.com.  Nutritional information is included on the menus.  Nutritional newsletters that include healthy snack ideas for the classroom can also be found on the website.  If you do not have internet access and want a menu sent home with your child, please contact us at 575-8650.

The menus are planned by the Food Service Director to meet one-third or more of the daily nutrients, as well as the meal pattern requirements of the National School Lunch Program.  A computerized nutrient analysis program is utilized to plan menus to meet requirements.

*Seaman Food Service provides sack lunches for field trips as requested by classroom teachers.
*Breakfast is offered daily at Seaman High School, Seaman Middle School, Rochester Elementary and Logan Elementary.

Meals served under the National School Lunch Program must meet nutrition guidelines based on the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.  No more than 30% of calories can come from fat and less than 10% from saturated fat.  School lunches provide one-third of the Recommended Dietary allowances for protein, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, iron, calcium and calories over the course of one week.
